Abandoned Place
Abandoned Place: Bair House in Arcata, CA (1888)
One of the State’s premier examples of Queen Anne architecture, the Bair House, built in 1888 for Dr. Fred Bangs, is attributed to architects Samuel and Joseph Newsom. This is a house of complex rooflines, corner tower, gables, bays and a richly textured surface of patterned shingles and applied ornamentation. Most notable is horseshoe entrance and balustrade, lavishly decorated spindle-work and Eastlake ornamentation. Samuel and Joseph C. Newsom, the same architects responsible for the Carson Mansion in Eureka are credited for this beautiful Victorian.
